Everlands

Category : Games

Everlands is an odd game, even for the standards of Android Games. It involves placing different animals on a hexagon based battlefield to try to gain the numerical advantage. Its very much a strategy game, one gains depth with the number of different animals rather than placing the player into different scenarios.

As with most strategy games, particularly mobile strategy games, this is not a ground braking graphic heavy game. However the battlefield is well designed and clearly defined. All the animals are distinctive and designed specifically with ease of use in mind. The presentation of this game is top-notch, with the game using a map system for the levels and an explanation ready for all aspects of the game.

One of the later levels.

The game is controlled entirely through the touchscreen, giving the game a feel similar to a point and click adventure. This is designed to be used with only a single hand making it perfect for standing in a train and such. The game is responsive and given to easy design it has little chance of clicking on the wrong section.

The gameplay is easy to understand yet has surprising depth, which is necessary for a successful strategy game. The comes from an array of different animals all with different strengths and weaknesses, such as a bear being stringer and a snake always having the first attack. The different combinations allows the game to really prosper. The game is decided on who has the most animals on the board when there is no more room left.

An explaination is available for all animals.

Overall this is a good game, if somewhat slow paced. The depth that is needed for a strategy game is here with the variation in the animals and the special features. Graphically it won’t blow your mind but it is efficient and the controls are to master. My feeling is that this appeal to existing fans of the genre.

Crazy Snowboard

Category : Games

Crazy snowboard is one of those Android Games, that you are sure is a port from a console, but it turns out it is actually an original game from the ground up. That’s not to say that it doesn’t borrow from other games – the Tony Hawks series being the most prime example – but it has both an old-school familiar arcade feel and a modern mobile aspect to it as well.

One of the first things that will strike is the graphics of the game, it has all the smooth animations and framerate of a top-level game, with the backdrop always being nicely featured and the courses being littered with well detailed ramps and trees. While it is not on the same level as the console games it does remind me of early dreamcast games and others from that era. The presentation is simple with the front end menu being simple and clear and the different missions being easily accessible. The adds a professional feel to the game.

The front menu with your avatar.

Another aspect of why it feels so professional is the controls. The game takes the traditional controller and mimics it onto the screen. This meaning that on the left, the action button is to spin and the right is used for different tricks. To steer the snowboarder, the game utilises the accelerometer, in the manner of a steering wheel, to move left and right. As the avatar is continually going forward only left and right is needed.

The gameplay is divided into a freestyle mode and missions. The missions concentrate on gathering letters, jumping through hoops or gaining a certain amount of points. All the missions feel different with the level design and structure being varied. However the challenges themselves are not the most imaginative like collecting ten coins or go through fifteen gates.

One of the different tricks available.

Overall this one of the best Android games available, with the graphics being one of the best on the mobile scene. The controls are easy to use, but most importantly the gameplay is addictive and encourages playing through again with different boards and snowboarders to unlock. There is no logical reason for me not to recommend this game.

Memory games are not something synonymous with Android games, but this might be the one to break the trend. Each level introduces a new dot which must be selected. This is available as a free game and is supported by in game ads. These ads appear in between levels and are never really a problem.

Initially this seems like the dullest game ever, but it quickly becomes a difficult challenge and by level twelve/thirteen you’ll find yourself trying to remember every other stage. You’ll find yourself playing the game at quite a fast pace and because of this each game doesn’t last very long, but this lends itself quite well to the ‘one more go’ ethos.

The quick ending screen.

The graphics are rudimentary at best, with only a static background and brightly coloured dots, this game was never going to win any awards for its graphical prowess. However this is easily forgiven because it is perfectly matched for the gameplay. Flashier graphics would have detracted from the game as a whole. There is no menu of sort, just a start button and a continue button in between levels. This presentation is again very stark and simple but one that suits itself well to the game. This also gives a slight brain training feel.

The controls are again very simple with one tap needed for everything. This could have caused some problems in later stages but the precision is here to allow the game to prevail. The game seems to recognise the difference between the dots meaning the controls doesn’t became an issue for the game.

The opening menu system. Simples.

Overall this is a surprisingly good game and one that is very different to other games on the Android games market. With its combination of memory testing and fast paced gameplay it has an appeal to pretty much everyone, and while simplistic and basic, what it aims to do, it does very well. So because of that I can’t help but recommend the game.
