Samsung Previews the ATIV S in These Two Official Videos

Samsung Previews the ATIV S in These Two Official Videos

It is widely believed that Samsung will not release it’s first Windows Phone 8 device the Samsung ATIV S to most of the world till sometime in February 2013. However this fact did not stop them from releasing two official “hands on” videos of this device. There is nothing earth shattering in these videos but they are good getting to know you videos for those not familiar with the Windows Phone OS.

I have posted them below… however I will warn you they are hard to watch. The narration is horrible and sounds like an outsourced call center worker is simply reading off a sheet of paper. Which is a shame because I believe the ATIV is going to be a brilliant device and these videos aren’t going to convince anyone of that.

Are you a Samsung Galaxy S II owner? It’s a happy time for owners of the device that took the Koreans a mile forward in the Mobile game as the Multi-Window Mode which was one of the greatest features found in the sizzling Samsung Galaxy Note II and which later made it’s way to the highly revered Samsung Galaxy S III, now arrives for Samsung Galaxy S II also.

Samsung Galaxy SII Multi Window Mode App Arrives

This is a fully working mode and it’s ”ONLY FOR 4.1.2 XXLSJ  deodexed ROMS”, with Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean build. So, if you are fascinated about the development, hit the source link below to get yours. Samsung Galaxy SII Multi Window Mode App Arrives

It was rumored that Multi-View won’t be compatible with Samsung Galaxy S II due to some impressions many people had about the ability of the size of the screen to run two applications  and maintain two windows at thesame time. And now, the reverse has been the case as the Samsung Galaxy S II has proven it’s ability to handle multitasking and maintaining two windows beyond all reasonable doubts. Like I said earlier, hit the source  link to get your own share of the cake and don’t forget to share your experience with us.

WhatsApp for Windows Phone 8

WhatsApp for Windows Phone 8

Windows 8 mobile users are sure to miss the highly successful instant messaging client WhatsApp in their new Windows 8 phone. But wait for a few days the product development for Windows Phone 8 is underway and will be released anytime soon.

The app is undergoing some heavy doses of alterations and will be launched for Windows Phone 8 some time in the very near future.

While there has been no official announcement from the developers of WhatsApp, the news is that the new app will be six times faster than previous versions and  there will also be new emoji included in the upcoming version. The background audio API would remain the same however the real challenge is to devise a may to keep the system running in background, which is must for WhatsApp considering that the Microsoft has severe restrictions on third party apps. Given the growing popularity of WhatsApp, Microsoft sure doesn’t want to be left behind in the race in mobile handsets market.

WhatsApp for Windows Phone 8

Earlier, downloads were available on WP store, but despite being able to activate and register the app, users found it difficult to use WhatsApp. So much so that the app has since been taken out from the store. However with new Windows 8 phone launches likely to be taking place in the months ahead, Microsoft must surely know the importance of apps for Windows 8 and the lack of popular apps on the store.

Hope the update comes soon. Will keep you guys posted of any further developments.

Xiaomi MI2 unboxing and first impressions

Xiaomi MI2 unboxing and first impressions

This week I received the Xiaomi MI2, the new flagship device from the Chinese company Xiaomi.

This is their first quad core device with some really amazing specifications and I am really excited to review this phone. I have run the MIUI ROM on my HTC Sensation XE since I always liked the look of it and also the extra built in features which will be mentioned in the full review. So here is what was in the box:

  • Phone
  • Battery
  • Charger (unfortunately Chinese but any charger with USB connector will do)
  • USB to Micro USB data cable
  • Warranty card
  • User manual (in Chinese)

2012-12-04 07.46.11
2012-12-04 07.47.12
2012-12-04 07.48.39
Xiaomi MI2 unboxing and first impressions

No headphones are included but people mostly buy their own anyway and if you like some Xiaomi ones then you can find the online for a reasonable price.

Specifications of this device are really impressive:

  • 4.3” Screen, resolution of 1280×720
  • 2GB LPDDR2 RAM
  • 1.5GHz Snapdragon APQ8064 Quad Core CPU
  • Retina IPS Display @ 342 PPI compared to (iPhone Retina Screen @ 326 PPI)
  • Dolby® Audio System
  • 2000 (3100 available separately) mAh battery
  • 3.5mm headphone jack (top left of MI-2)
  • Adreno 320 graphics core
  • 8MP Rear Camera and 2MP Front Facing Camera
  • Android 4.1 (MIUI Jelly Bean)
  • 16/32GB EMMC Storage (NO MICRO SD SUPPORT)
  • GPS, GLONASS AGPS, Bluetooth HID, Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi Direct
  • USB 2.0 / USB 2.0 OTG, MHL
  • FM Radio
  • 1080P & 720P quality recording
  • GSM Bands (850/900/1800/1900) Mhz, WCDMA (850/1900/2100) Mhz
  • WAPI / WLAN (Wi-Fi) 802.11b/g/n
  • DC HSDPA+ / HSPDA / 3G / EDGE / GPRS / WCDMA / GSM
  • LED Notifications
  • USB Charging port
  • Standard SIM Card connector

One thing that I noticed on using the phone in the dark the first time was that the capacitive buttons are NOT backlit. After some goggling I found that this is by design and really is a bit of a shame but no deal breaker in my opinion.

Other then that I am really pleased with the phone. It looks great, feels great in the hand and the screen is amazing. The speed so far is great and I am currently testing battery life. Will be back with a full review in a week or two.

Hike, the new instant messenger in town

Hike, the new instant messenger in town

Want to have free messaging for life? Get Hike. This is WhatsApp like app but with a lifetime free messaging opportunity.

Hike is a new Instant messenger launched by Indian Developers. It is easy, sleek and has an elegant interface. Whats more its free for life. The other great advantage is you can send 100 SMS’s to non Hike users, who can read the messages in the native SMS inbox.

The developers are very positive to the reception this will receive as the competition in the IM place is getting rather crowded with FB also launching its own IM. What makes Hike different, here’s what the developers had to say. They are building features like video chat, voice chat and what not, which the Indian infrastructure does not support. Also, somewhere the customer requires an app which is simple and enables him to do what he intends to, rather than building features which are seldom used.

Hike runs on 2G, 3G and wi-fi (when available) for connectivity.

Hike, the new instant messenger in town

Hike has tried to cash in on the fact that Indians are SMS crazy people and therefore  the Hike  app  allows  global users to send Hike2SMS and Indian users to reply with SMS2 Hike. The first option is free for Hike users, and the latter response costs only the same as a regular SMS. This way friends and relatives living outside India can stay connected. It doesn’t require any username, pin or password.

Hike, the new instant messenger in town

Hike is currently available for IOS, Android and Windows users. Nokia users may have to wait for little while before the developers release Symbian version.

As per the head of product and strategy for BSB, Kavin Bharti Mittal:

People use messaging in various forms; they use it via different apps and modes for different purposes. What we’re trying to provide via Hike is a single application to connect with everyone via messaging. We believe that streamlining this will greatly improve the connectivity of Indians.

Hike, the new instant messenger in town

The developers have promised a spam free app but how they are going to make money is anybodies guess. But the app is worth giving once-over.

Kindly download the app for your phone from here and post your comments.

Text-to-911 service to be launched by the four largest US carriers

Text to 911 service to be launched by the four largest US carriers

The Federal Communications Commission announced that the four largest US wireless carriers: AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile have agreed to create a service that will allow customers to contact 911 call center via text message.

FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said:

“Access to 911 must catch up with how consumers communicate in the 21st century – and today, we are one step closer towards that vital goal. Last year I announced a comprehensive plan to accelerate the transition to Next Generation 911, including text-to-911, and the FCC has acted to advance this effort.”

Text-to-911 will be very helpful to people with hearing or speech disabilities or injured who may not be able to make a voice call.

The service will launch nationwide by May 15th 2014 with major deployments expected in 2013.

Head to Head Speed Test Samsung Note II vs. Nokia Lumia 920 Everyday Use

Head to Head Speed Test Samsung Note II vs. Nokia Lumia 920 Everyday Use

A little while back I had was using a HTC Titan II as my daily driver and was testing a Samsung Galaxy Note. While I was testing the Note I noticed it seemed that it took longer to do the common everyday tasks that I do the most. While the dual core specs on the Note vs. the Single core specs on the Titan wouldn’t back up my suspension I decided to test it anyway. I found out that in fact the Titan was quicker on stuff like email, texting, calendar, etc… and the Note was quicker at launching 3rd party apps like games, Facebook, Twitter clients, etc. Now I have the Note II and the Lumia 920 (ready to do the same test) each a flagship device for their OS in their own right. With the Quad core on the Note and the Dual Core on the Lumia how will the test go? Let’s find out shall we?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EY7zhblqsjk

Again while this test was far from scientific it does give you a good idea just how far both devices have come. The Samsung Galaxy Note seems to have gotten faster not only by it’s Quad Core processor but also the Touch Wiz UI is updated and feels lighter in terms of how much processing power it takes up. The Nokia Lumia 920 is now Dueled Cored with more RAM and the ability to “multitask” so apps fire up quicker.

In the end on both these devices I didn’t see a huge difference that would make me change OS’s either way if I had a preference. That being said the Note II has not been used extensively yet so I am not getting the “Android Lag” that I got with the original Note after two months of use. Still want to know more? You can either leave me a question in the comment, shoot me a quick tweet or simply go down to your local AT&T store and try them both.
